WOMEN, PEACE AND SECURITY

Continued violence threatens the future of millions of women, girls and their communities across the globe. The international community has recognized the invaluable contribution women make to prevent conflict and sustainable peace building. Nevertheless, women and their role has been largely overlooked and neglected from the decision making structures in the context of sustained peace building and peace making. Recalling Security Council resolutions 1325 (2000), 1612 (2005), 1820 (2008), 1889 (2009), 1960 (2010), 2106 (2013), 2117 (2013) , 2122 (2013) and the importance of ensuring the protection, rights and wellbeing of women and girls in all phases of conflict and post-conflict settings, the equal participation of women in conflict prevention and resolution, and in reconstruction and peace building efforts, the inclusion of female ex-combatants in disarmament and demobilization programs, the prosecution of those who commit crimes against women and girls and the requirement for reparations commensurate with the crimes inflicted on women and girls, Women Peace and Security Unit at INHURED advocates for the equal and full participation of women in all efforts to create and maintain international peace and security. This unit focuses on implementation of Nepal’s NAP on UNSCR 1325, 1820 and all other Security Council resolutions that address this issue. The unit serves as a bridge between women’s human rights defenders working in conflict-affected situations and other relevant stakeholders at different tiers. INHURED being one of the active member of 1325 action group in Nepal plays an important role in localization of UNSCR related to WPS and particularly by effective implementation of Nepal’s NAP on UNSCR 1325 and 1820 and monitoring policy and practice on women, peace and security.

Using SCR 1325, Nepal’s NAP on 1325 and 1820 together with BPFA and widely ratified treaties as our guiding instrument, the WPS unit at INHURED assist in promoting a gender perspective and respect for human rights in all peace and security, conflict prevention and management and peace building initiatives of the civic institution and other relevant stakeholders.

Envisioning the stark reality that sustainable peace depends on the full participation of women in all decision-making aspects to prevent violent conflict and protect all civilians. The WPS unit believes that a broad and positive impact on the lives of all people experiencing conflict will result from full implementation of gravitational document like SCR 1325 and promotion of the Beijing Platform for Action, CEDAW and other supporting instruments. We strongly believe that implementation of SCR 1325 is a necessary tool for the prevention of armed conflict and the key to facilitate inclusion of gender in the ongoing peace and security discourse taking place globally.
